There's No God Like Jehovah!

I was singing this song to myself this morning and thinking on the Glory of the Lord. When the redeemed read the holy scriptures our spirits are quickened by the evidence of His Glory.

In Exodus we see Him in the desert as a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day. We see Him descending upon Sinai with such power that the entire mountain shook and smoked like a furnace. Oh how wonderful and terrible is our Lord!

We see His everlasting mercy when even at the climax of Revelation He sends forth a holy angel to preach repentance to a guilty and condemned world as it is comes under His divine judgment.

Many have corrupted the God of the Bible, the Ancient of Days, the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last. In his vain imagination man has made gods of animals, objects, the sun and stars and all manner of created things in between. But most notably man makes a god of himself.

Man in his natural state is depraved and without God. While many sociologists and modern philosophers would have us think that mankind is basically good; born with a "clean slate" upon which society makes its mark (i.e. nature and nurture), the Bible unequivocally states that the natural man is "altogether gone astray" and that "none seek after Him, no not one". The only hope for unregenerate man is the shed blood of Jesus Christ on Calvary. This is the only method whereby sinful man can be reconciled to a holy and righteous God.

But in his natural state man is incapable of reasoning properly. All his thoughts are "continually on evil". This is because without repentance (a change of heart) and regeneration (a renewal of spirit) toward God man's reasoning is darkened. Due to his darkened unregenerate mind the natural man is incapable of understanding the things of God.

This sad situation then leads to the natural man's greatest evil, which is setting himself up as his own god. Since again, this is the natural state of man it doesn't seem odd or the least bit unusual to unsaved man or sinful society at large. But here is the crux of the problem, God's commandments clearly state that man should have no other gods before Him. When man reasons according to his own sinful nature he processes all knowledge, all information, all decisions and all actions through his own autonomous (self-directed) reasoning. In this case man fails to "think God's thoughts after Him" by reasoning according to the revealed counsel of God as found in the Holy Bible.

This is what is expected of God when He admonishes us through the inspired apostle Paul to "take every thought captive to Christ". This is only possible when our minds have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Without him man is in continual rebellion against God and is His enemy both in his heart and in his mind. This is why regardless of the good or commendable things men may seem to do, they fall short of God's holy standards. Even the most righteous works of the unredeemed end up as nothing more than sacrifices offered unto idol gods, namely the god of self. The natural man seeks after his own glory before men and takes no thought of the things of God. This is an affront to the Creator.

The God of the Bible, though terrible and awesome is also so caring and loving and He demonstrated that love when He stepped from His heavenly throne and entered into our sin sick world as Jesus Christ. He did this so that He could "once and for all" pay the price for our sin against Him. He alone was worthy and able to span the abyss between eternal life and eternal damnation with an old wooden cross. The way still stands open today for those who would humble themselves before Him and submit to His authority in their lives and receive the free gift of forgiveness made available by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.



Days Of Elijah

These are the days of Elijah,
Declaring the word of the Lord:
And these are the days of Your servant Moses,
Righteousness being restored.

Of famine and darkness and sword,
Still, we are the voice in the desert crying
'Prepare ye the way of the Lord!'

The dry bones becoming as flesh;

Rebuilding a temple of praise.

And we are the labourers in Your vineyard,
Declaring the word of the Lord!
